Should You Change Your Medicare Plan This Year?

AEP Is Around the Corner - Connect Community - BCBSIL

If your mailbox has been filling up lately with Medicare plan offers, you’re not alone. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 through December 7, and it’s your once-a-year opportunity to review and, if needed, change your Medicare coverage.

You might be tempted to ignore all the paperwork and assume your current plan will keep working for you — but taking a few minutes to review your options could save you money and ensure you have the coverage you really need.

Why review your Medicare plan every year?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug (Part D) plans can change each year. Providers may update their benefits, pharmacy networks, or medication lists. Costs like premiums and co-pays can also shift. Reviewing your plan helps you stay informed and avoid surprises when the new year begins.

Start with your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)

Each fall, your Medicare plan sends an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) by mail. This document outlines updates to your plan for the upcoming year. Read it carefully — even small changes can make a big difference in your healthcare experience.

When reviewing your ANOC, look for:

  • Cost changes: Will your monthly premium, deductible, or co-pays increase or decrease?

  • Coverage updates: Are there new benefits or services added or removed?

  • Provider networks: Is your doctor, hospital, or pharmacy still in-network?

  • Prescription drugs: Are your current medications still on the plan’s formulary, and are they in the same tier?

If any of these areas change, it’s worth comparing other plan options to see if you could get better value or coverage.

Think about your health care needs for next year

Your health can change from year to year — and so can your coverage needs. If you’ve been diagnosed with a new condition, need a surgery, or have new prescriptions, it might be time to explore different plans that better fit your situation.

Make a quick list of:

  • The doctors and specialists you visit regularly

  • Medications you take and how often you refill them

  • Equipment or supplies you use at home — such as CPAP machines, blood pressure monitors, or mobility aids

This list will help you decide if your current plan still fits your needs or if another one might offer better benefits or lower costs.

Keep your budget in mind

Healthcare costs can add up quickly. If your plan’s premiums or out-of-pocket expenses are increasing, review whether it still feels affordable. Some plans may offer discounts, savings programs, or broader coverage for medical supplies that could make a real difference.

And if your plan becomes too expensive, check if you qualify for financial assistance with your Medicare costs.

You have choices — but don’t wait

If you’re happy with your current plan, it will automatically renew for the next year. However, if you want to make changes, be sure to do so before December 7, when Annual Enrollment ends. Any updates you make will take effect on January 1.
