The best way to understand Medicare is to start with the essentials: Parts A, B, C, and D. In this second article of our four-part “Medicare Basics” series, we’ll cover Medicare Part B.
Part B is one of the two components of Original Medicare, which is managed by the federal government (along with Part A). While Part A covers hospital and inpatient services, Part B, such as doctor visits, diagnostic tests, preventive services, and certain home health care.
What Medicare Part B Covers
Medicare Part B provides coverage for a wide range of outpatient and medically necessary services. This includes routine and specialist doctor visits, preventive screenings, lab work, diagnostic imaging, and more.
Examples of services and items covered by Medicare Part B include:
Routine and specialist doctor visits
Outpat
Ambulatory
Preventive care (e.g., flu shots, vaccines)
Preventive health screenings (such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and diabetes screenings)
Clinical laboratory services (blood tests, urine tests, etc.)
Diagnostic imaging: X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, EKGs, and more
Durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc.)
Emergency room services
Part-time skilled nursing and home health aide services (for homebound patients)
Outpatient mental health care and counseling
⚠️ Some services may only be covered under certain conditions. If you’re unsure, talk with your healthcare provider to confirm whether Medicare Part B will cover the care or equipment you need.
How Much Does Medicare Part B Cost in 2025?
Unlike Medicare Part A (which is premium-free for most people), everyone must pay a monthly premium for Part B.
The standard Part B premium for 2025 is $185.00 per month.
Your actual premium may be higher depending on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) from your IRS tax return two years earlier (for 2025, based on your 2023 income).
Premiums can range from $185.00 up to $628.90 per month.
Deductibles and Copayments
In addition to the monthly premium, Part B also has an annual deductible and cost-sharing requirements.
Deductible (2025):$257
Coinsu After meeting your deductible, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered medical services, outpatient mental health care, and durable medical equipment. Medicare covers the remaining 80%.
Key Takeaway: Medicare Part B is essential if you want coverage for your doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive screenings, and durable medical equipment. While it requires a monthly premium, it provides access to many vital health services that Part A doesn’t cover.
