The cushion does the actual sealing work on the mask, and it's a consumable by design. ResMed's dual-wall Spring Air cushion has a soft outer membrane that conforms to the face and a self-adjusting inner wall that holds the seal as you move — but silicone softens, stretches, and loses its shape with nightly use, facial oils, and repeated washing.
The wear is gradual, so most people don't notice the cushion itself — they notice they're tightening the headgear more and more to stop leaks. That's the tell: the straps aren't the problem, the seal is. A fresh cushion restores the original fit at normal strap tension, and with it the comfort that keeps therapy consistent.

Wash the cushion daily in warm water with a mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and air dry away from direct sunlight — facial oils degrade silicone fastest. Replace it roughly every 1–3 months, or sooner if it feels sticky or stiff, looks cloudy or discoloured, has lost its shape, or if you find yourself tightening the headgear to stop leaks.
