Most CPAP hoses are cleaned with mild soap and water and replaced periodically. An autoclavable tube is different: it's manufactured to survive autoclave sterilization — high-temperature, high-pressure steam that kills essentially all microorganisms — so the same hose can be reprocessed and reused rather than discarded.
That capability matters in specific settings. In hospitals, clinics, and multi-patient environments, equipment used by more than one person must be sterilized to a high standard between patients, and a standard tube would degrade under autoclave temperatures. This dark-gray tube is built for exactly that reprocessing. For a single home user, it's usually more than needed — a standard tube is simpler and cheaper — but where autoclaving is part of the protocol, this is the correct hose.
It's a 22 mm standard-bore tube with standard cuffs, so it fits ResMed's S8/S9 and Air-series devices and other manufacturers' machines using standard connections. Note this is non-heated tubing.

Follow the reprocessing instructions in the ResMed documentation and your facility's protocol for autoclaving — including cycle parameters and inspection after each cycle. Inspect the tube for cracks, cloudiness, stiffness, or damage before each use and after each sterilization cycle, and remove it from service when it no longer passes inspection. Ensure it is completely dry before use.
