The cushion does the actual sealing work, and it's a consumable by design. The AirTouch N20's UltraSoft™ memory-foam cushion is what makes the mask special: instead of silicone, a soft foam cushion conforms gently to the contours of the nose and face, giving an exceptionally soft seal that's especially kind to sensitive skin and to anyone who gets red marks or pressure lines from silicone.
That softness comes with a trade-off: foam is more delicate than silicone and wears faster. It also can't be washed the same way — foam shouldn't be submerged or scrubbed like a silicone cushion. As it ages it loses softness and sealing ability; the usual sign is more leaks, or tightening the headgear more to hold the seal. A fresh cushion restores the original soft, reliable fit.
Foam (AirTouch) vs silicone (AirFit): this is the memory-foam cushion for the AirTouch N20. The AirFit N20, which shares the same frame, uses a silicone InfinitySeal™ cushion instead. Because the frame is shared, you can switch between foam and silicone by changing the cushion — but they are different cushions (choose the one you want).
Foam cushions are cared for differently from silicone: do not submerge or scrub. Follow ResMed's AirTouch cleaning guidance (typically wiped, not soaked), keep it dry, and away from direct sunlight. Because foam is more delicate, it's typically replaced more often than silicone — replace it when it loses softness, looks soiled or discoloured, or no longer seals well.
