That's helpful where a person needs help moving enough air, not just an open airway.
The "ST" adds a crucial element: Spontaneous/Timed mode with a backup respiratory rate. In spontaneous breathing, the device follows the patient's own breaths; but if the patient doesn't take a breath within a set interval, the timed backup delivers one automatically. That backup matters for people whose breathing drive is reduced or unreliable — for example in certain neuromuscular conditions, hypoventilation, or forms of central sleep apnea — ensuring a minimum breathing rate is maintained.
